Raising the bar

These classes are for those who have a solid understanding of the core principles we promote and show how to take the game forwards – in terms of artistic ambition, interpretation, gesture and rehearsal method.

Five 90-minute classes:

  1. Art and artistry
    • The flow processes essential to achieving our artistic ambitions.
  2. Interpretation
    • Examining the conversion process from abstract idea to musical sound.
  3. Advanced mechanics
    • How to combine gestures to create a single line of narrative flow.
  4. Auftakts
    • How to hit all the targets simultaneously with one shot.
  5. Rehearsal management
    • The principles which build artistic value rather than inhibiting it.

Devised by CA director Jonathan Brett and presented via the Zoom platform, these classes are predicated on participants having a solid understanding of our approach to conducting.

Mastering Time

Like stage magic, conducting is an activity steeped in mystery – many see the results but the complexity of the processes means that it is one of perpetual learning. This series of presentations explores the component tasks, exposes some of the myths, analyses the challenges and examines the principles underlying the connection between gesture and high quality sound.

In the words of one of our past participants: "This is a course for people who want their music to be the best it can possibly be – for the orchestra, for the composer, for the audience and for themselves. This course is about what really works and is taught by someone for whom it really does."
